Innovation drives lasting prosperity but equating it with invention has led many cities to waste trillions trying to replicate 'Silicon Valley.' This approach has created a few high-tech hubs while leaving many regions struggling to maintain economic dynamism. In our upcoming Transylvania Lectures talk, Professor Dan Breznitz will challenge this misconception, drawing on his award-winning book. Breznitz argues that true growth doesn’t require a high-tech industry but rather an understanding of global production's evolving structure. By recognizing their unique advantages, communities can thrive through specialized innovation.
Our guest speaker will be Dr. Dan Breznitz, a globally recognized expert on rapid-innovation industries and innovation policy. He is a University Professor at the University of Toronto, holding the Munk Chair of Innovation Studies and co-directing the Innovation Policy Lab. He has advised multinational corporations, governments, and international organizations and serves as a Clifford Clarke Visiting Economist with Canada’s Department of Finance. Before moving to Toronto, he spent eight years as a professor in Georgia Institute of Technology and was the cofounder and CEO of a software company in Israel. His latest book, Innovation in Real Places: Strategies for Prosperity in an Unforgiving World, which won the Balsillie Prize for Public Policy and was named one of the Financial Times' Best Business Books of 2021, offers fresh strategies for prosperity and debunks dangerous myths about innovation and growth.
His partner in discussion will be Dr. László Seer, lecturer at Babeș-Bolyai University, Faculty of Economics and Business Administration in Kolozsvár/Cluj-Napoca. With over 15 years of experience as a strategic advisor, he specializes in digital marketing and focuses on strategy development and planning. As a researcher, he has contributed to projects exploring digitalization and technology acceptance, combining academic rigor with practical insights.
